Farming and Drought

First of all, I am so thankful for the rain we have had this summer in WNC; I empathize with all the farmers who haven’t been as fortunate across the country.  Yesterday on the news, I heard a somewhat disturbing comment.  If I heard correctly, Georgia is considering paying farmers to get out of farming to help alleviate water concerns.  While water issues are complex, I think that getting rid of farms is very short-sighted.  What are they going to do, have more golf courses? More suburban sprawl?   I prefer efficient use of water to produce food rather than leisure activities, not that I am against leisure activities, but let’s be smart about this.  Also, let’s be smart about the design of our cities and communities.  Again, I realize this is a complex issue and we need to take a thorough look at a variety of factors, but I don’t think we should get rid of farms as our first answer.  Again, short-sighted!
